SAVING OUR TIGERS

Did you know that saving our tigers has a much larger impact on our daily lives than we think? Find out more about several key areas where tigers play a big role.

PRESERVING WILDLIFE BIODIVERSITY

Current remaining tiger habitat ranges cover around 700,000km², the large majority of which is also in four biodiversity hotspots and which overlaps with 332 key biodiversity areas and 10 natural world heritage sites. Thousands of species – including one-horned rhinos and Asian elephants – benefit from the protection of tiger habitats.

SUSTAINABILITY

(PROTECTING THE FOREST)

Protecting tiger habitats means also protecting the forests they live in. The ecosystem services sustained by tiger landscapes sustain us as well. Tiger habitats overlap watersheds that are vital for the survival of more than 830 million people. Tiger conservation also contributes to preserving sacred natural sites and traditional cultures where many indigenous peoples live. The social significance of tigers can be seen in cosmologies, faiths and folktales of almost all civilizations in tiger range countries.

COMBATING CLIMATE CHANGE

Safeguarding tiger landscapes protects the last remaining forests across Asia, which are critical for carbon sequestration and helping to mitigate climate change. Forest landscapes protected for tigers store more carbon on average than other forests in the region. In many tiger landscapes, these forests also provide vital protection against the impact of natural disasters, many of which have been worsened by climate change.

TIGER CONSERVATION EFFORTS

STOP ILLEGAL WILDLIFE TRADE

Illegal wildlife trade involves the unlawful harvest and trade in live animals and acts as a principal threat to tigers. They are wanted for their skin and bones.

Find out how you prevent it at cyberspotter.wwf.sg

SILENT THE SNARES

Snares are made up of ropes, wires or cables and are one of the most brutal hunting methods. Hidden in forests, these snares are indiscriminate where over 700 mammal species apart from tigers fall prey to it. It’s time we take action and stop this cruelty.

TIGERS ARE THE MOST ENDANGERED BIG CAT

Wild tigers now occupy less than 5% of their historic range and what remains is becoming increasingly fragmented. Nowhere is their plight more urgent than in Southeast Asia where their numbers continue to decline at an alarming rate.
